Collaboration between IMaLeVICS (UPV) and the Latvian University strengthens international research on Fuzzy Logic
During July 2025, Professor Juan José Miñana, member of the IMaLeVICS research group, carried out a one-month research stay at the Latvian University (Riga, Latvia), working alongside Professor Olga Grigorenko from the Many-valued Mathematical Structures research group.
The stay focused on the development of new methods for constructing fuzzy metrics —mathematical tools designed to measure similarity in environments affected by uncertainty— and on the topological analysis of the resulting structures.
This research continues one of the objectives of the IMaLeVICS project, which seeks to develop novel fuzzy logic tools for practical applications in fields such as color perception, engineering, and image processing.
Scientific Results and Collaboration Outcomes
The collaboration between both institutions has resulted in a scientific manuscript entitled “Generalizing a construction of non-strong fuzzy metrics from metrics and studying their induced topology”, currently under final revision before submission to an international journal.
This research builds upon previous works on fuzzy metric spaces developed by IMaLeVICS members, such as On Principal Fuzzy Metric Spaces, expanding the theoretical framework towards new methods of construction and topological analysis.
Awarded Paper at EUSFLAT 2025
During his stay, Professor Miñana also participated as a speaker at the EUSFLAT 2025 International Conference (European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology), presenting the paper “On Fuzzy Metrics Constructed from Metrics and their Topology”, which was awarded as the Best Theoretical Paper of the Conference.

Teaching and Knowledge Transfer
In addition to his research activities, Professor Miñana taught three postgraduate lectures within the Summer School on Fuzzy Logic and Applications, also held in Riga.
The sessions included:
- Introduction to Fuzzy Logic
- Fuzzy Metrics: Theory
- Fuzzy Metrics: Applications
Consolidating International Research Networks
The activities developed in Riga have strengthened the collaboration between IMaLeVICS (UPV) and the Many-valued Mathematical Structures group (Latvian University), advancing shared research lines in Fuzzy Logic and Applied Mathematics.
This collaboration illustrates IMaLeVICS’ ongoing commitment to international scientific exchange and the development of interpretable mathematical models with applications in perception, computation, and decision-making.
At IMaLeVICS – Image, Color, and Vision Science Group (Universitat Politècnica de València), we bring together researchers from mathematics, computer science, and engineering to explore how perception, color, and fuzzy logic can help us better understand complex systems.
