IMaLeVICS: a new project within VIP Lab

In 2020, the Visual Image Processing Laboratory (VIP Lab) was launched with the mission to contribute to a better understanding of how the human visual system perceives digital images. In 2023, this work will continue through the IMaLeVICS project.

Our research group has these years studied the visual masking of high-frequency noise in color images in high-luminance image regions. We have also examined the visual masking of high-frequency noise in color images depending on image content for grayscale images. Additionally, we have explored the acuity for blur perception in images depending on image content. By combining our models for high-frequency noise masking and blur detection sensitivity, we have developed a new way to evaluate the visual quality of images.

We have developed seven codes, that can be downloaded for free from resources, showcasing the progress of our research. However, we still have a long way to go.

For this reason, at the end of 2022, we developed IMaLeVICS (Interpretable Machine Learning for Vision, Imaging, and Color Sciences), a new project within VIP Lab. We are delighted to announce that in 2023 we’ve been granted funding from the Generalitat Valenciana, and until 2025 we’ll continue to improve understanding of how the human visual system perceives digital images.
